Bastia
Bastia, the main commercial and industrial city of Corsica, lies on the Mediterranean in the department of Haute-Corse. Founded in the 14th century, it is an important leisure destination with beaches and bathing spots. The city is famous for its 16th-century medieval citadel, the 17th-century cathedral of Ste Marie, and its historic churches and old harbour. Bastia has well-developed metal and tobacco industries. Its Mediterranean climate brings mild winters and warm summers, and the best time to visit is spring and autumn.
