Hannover
Hanover, the capital of Lower Saxony, lies on the River Leine. It is a city with a rich history, going back to 1022, when a market settlement was established here. It gained its town charter in the 13th century, and in the 14th century it was ringed with walls and numerous towers, many of which survive to this day, such as the Pferdeturm and the Beginenturm. Hanover was a member of the Hanseatic League and an important trading centre. The city has a mild climate, with warm summers and cool winters. It is best visited in spring or summer, when the weather is good for sightseeing.
